

Once woken up, John-117 immediately asks why he was woken, to which she tells him that she has detected numerous intrusions within the ship, and is skeptical towards them being a rescue team. Confused, she hurriedly begins the thaw process on John-117's cryo tube, waking him up. Inside, Cortana comes to life as she detects that the ship is being scanned by an alien source. The game cuts to four years after the events of Halo 3, with the wreckage of the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn coming into orbit of Requiem. Halsey goes on to say that her Spartans weren't just military hardware, but the next evolutionary step for humanity, and that they shouldn't underestimate them especially John-117. When she claims that her Spartans defeated the Covenant, especially John-117, the agent states that the Spartans were created to deal with human rebellion, not the Covenant. He questions her on her use of the Spartans, and their controversial origins. The game opens up in a secret ONI facility, with an unnamed ONI agent interrogating Dr.

The game, being a direct sequel to the main trilogy, returns to having John-117 as the primary protagonist, with Cortana also returning as a result. It also borrows aspects from other games, like armor abilities from Halo Reach. Cutscenes retain their usual importance to the story, but the campaign gameplay is much more streamlined, with simpler gameplay. Halo 4's campaign is unique in that it takes the old linear formula in Halo: Combat Evolved and adds to it with newer gaming ideas used during the turn of the decade for FPS games. It is the first of the Reclaimer Saga, and the first Halo made (from scratch) by 343 Industries since Bungie resigned from the franchise. However, due to Xbox One's lack of backwards compatibility, it cannot be played on its successor console.
